Herding Breeds: the following web pages may help in understanding the historical use and function of the various dogs.
Herding on the Web: Another excellent site with all kinds of information and breed references by fellow herder Linda Rorem. I've tried to avoid too much overlap.

http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/research/canine/projects/mdr1/  Research & information on breeds that have the "ivermectin sensitivity" gene.  All of these dogs have some ancestry tracing back to a British "collie" in the 1890s or so. Interesting research on the relationships of Aussies, ACDs, Beardies, Collies, Border Collies, English Shepherds & others.

http://www.pnas.org/cgi/reprint/101/32/11725 Article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science on the history & relationships of those breeds with the mdr1 gene. INCLUDES A FAMILY TREE.

French Herding:
In France there are 3 levels. The first one (Niveau I) is for "non professional users" (non breeders). Two results with more than 75% (Excellent) with two different Judges give rights to enter the second level. Second one (Niveau II) (breeders enter this level directly) two results with more than 75% (Excellent) with two different judges are necessary to obtain the "BREVET" (license). With this "Brevet", the individual can enter in the third level (Niveau III). Third level is the selective access to the French "championship".

Here are the French qualifying statistics from 2005 and 2006
This page has the trial results with the names of the owners

The results (and a report) of the championship are here: http://cn.chiens.troupeaux.free.fr/cht_07/index.html
Same for 2006: http://cn.chiens.troupeaux.free.fr/cht_06/index.html
All French championships: http://cn.chiens.troupeaux.free.fr/cun_championnats/
And all results (php/mysql) are here: (enter as a guest - "Connexion comme invit
é") in "Listing_result (Invité)" you'll get all results till 2005; change language to English: go to advance search: "Race" contains "Berger Belge GROEN"
2 gronendael and one T BB Malinois" ("T" as "Type" because unknown origine)

Breeds with some herding background
(In herding breeds, herding is at least part of the criteria in selection of the dogs, either historically or currently or both. In the list of breeds below, ancestry can be traced to a herding breed(s) but selection has not been based on any herding criteria):
